Vintage Universal Waffle Iron

I had been thinking about getting a waffle maker for quite awhile.  And the kids really love waffles, so better make them from scratch for goodness sake, and frugality’s too.

This was  a super easy search and I liked what I found! I looked on Craigslist and it popped up immediately… Vintage Waffle Iron  I was in love with the 1920s Universal punched steel base working vintage appliance with original cord, and just eight bucks people!!

I recently came across an adorable website that refurbishes  vintage appliances.  The completely refurbished  appliance is astonishingly beautiful, and spendy.  It looks like you get what you pay for.

But I am wondering if there is an acceptable home version of this refinish job that I can do at home?

I would love to clean this old darling up but I don’t know where to start for fear of ruining the finish or functionality somehow.  It happens to make really good waffles!  This also has the original fabric covered cord.  I love picturing mothers before me using this.  The old lady that I bought it from said that this waffle iron had been in the family for over 60 years.

Now, I really want to clean away the old grease seeing how pretty it can be, I am thinking of using Mr. Muscle oven cleaner.  Claims No fumes nor heating required, so it’ll hopefully look like the pic below.  Any recommendations?

It’s rather sad how now-a-days things are made/built with so little character as compared to things from yesteryear. Your waffle iron is so pretty. I wonder if some chrome polish would work? (Like from the car detail aisle.) I really have no idea if chrome polish would work for aluminum. Is it aluminum? It looks like it could be pretty darn shiny – silver plated? I would be quite araid to put oven cleaner on it – it might tarnish beyond repair. I’ll be interested to know what you work out.

Greetings !! I have the identical 1920′s machine !! Mine is in such good condition I’m not going to touch it. Hey, does your machine still have the original Red light bulb in the bottom that tells you when the waffles are done? It literally GLOWS while cooking.

Oh if you don’t then please email me and i’ll send you a picture of the machine while cooking. Very modernistic for the 1920′s !
